Difference Between Gastric Sleeve & Gastric Bypass Surgery

Obesity is a problem, but much bigger problem is to reduce it. We have many options to reduce weight such as make some changes in the diet, do daily workouts, diet pills etc. but what works more nowadays is the surgical procedures.

A surgical procedure, which helps to reduce weight is called as bariatric surgery. The most two common procedures are gastric sleeve as well as gastric bypass surgery. One of the best bariatric surgery is performed by BMI of Texas which is located at San Antonia. They have an expert team, which can help you shape of your life.

What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric Sleeve Surgery: In this, the surgeon would remove about 80 percent of your stomach, leaving behind a small stomach pouch just like a banana. So, when the person eats, he will feel the fullness once that pouch is filled. Thus, reducing his food intake.

What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric Bypass Surgery: It is also called as Roux-En- Y gastric bypass. Here too, a small stomach pouch is created by removing or by-passing most of your stomach along with a first part of your small intestine. Then the newly created small pouch is connected to the remaining small intestine.

Later-on the bypassed stomach is again attached to the small intestine so that any acid or digestive enzymes produced there can be sent to the intestine. What helps here is the portion of the intestine, which is removed with the stomach, which absorbs some calories and nutrients. Since this portion is now bypassed, the absorption of calories doesn’t happen, and this helps to reduce weight.

Difference in their recovery time?

Gastric sleeve is a one step procedure where laparoscopic procedure is used and there would be small incisions done. You can get back home in 1 or 2 days if you do not have any complications or pain.

Gastric Bypass is a two-step procedure where laparoscopic procedure is used, but it is a little complicated one. You would need to be at least 2 days in the hospital. If there are complications then open surgery would be done and it will take more time to heal as there would be more incisions.

What are the risk and complications in both the procedures?

Here in the bariatric surgery, the risk to any kind of complications is just 4 percent. However, here are some factors that can lead to complicate the surgery:

  1. Excess Loss of blood or development of blood clots in your legs and lungs
  2. Side-effects of anesthesia and some kind of infection due to the incisions done.

Complications of Gastric Sleeve Surgery:

Gastrointestinal obstruction, acid reflux, leakage of stomach fluid, malnutrition, low blood sugar level etc.

Complications of Gastric Bypass Surgery:

Nausea, bloating and abdominal cramps, high risk of malnutrition, stomach ulcers, bowel obstruction, heart palpitations, rapid heartbeat and sweating.

So which procedure to go for, your bariatric surgeon will have to consider your weight, medical history and any other health problems. Hence, taking advice from your doctor is the best option to get better results.
